Food in a Hat
School lunches are usually portrayed as a bad thing and are nasty. One of the biggest problems among teenagers and children is obesity due to the foods they are consuming. It is their choice and not anyone else’s to make for that person. But if surrounded by junk food and fast food restaurants, it doesn’t help you or others because that is the given option right in front of us. At NMHS a majority of students eat a lot of fast foods, junk food, etc., which causes their health to not be as good. Many people’s diets have been changing because of foods around us and are given limited amount for healthiness, so food at NMHS and fast food around us should be changed to healthier options so that students don’t become unhealthy.
Many schools are trying to change for healthier food options but students still complain that the food is not good and how unfulfilling the food was. Although the students dislike the new foods, schools should still work to make the lunches healthier so that we are not eating bad. The school should give it a try and if it starts to become a big problem, they should find better alternatives to make food healthy and good tasting at the same time. “... other schools have observed that while students were not happy at first, they have gradually adapted to new standards, alternatives available for purchase...”(Why we need to make school lunches healthier). Even though the change for better options was hard for the students, they ended up adapting to the new foods and actually started to enjoy it. “Transition is not easy for many of us, and it can be particularly tricky for kids” (Why we need to make school lunches healthier).” The transition was not easy, they had to make food that taste good but healthy, at the same time. ItT was hard to find those foods for children because of how picky the students are. It is difficult to change from the foods they have been eating to a healthier alternative. Although it could be a struggle, it will be worth the change at the end of everything.
The change may be hard to work around but we could do it and we won’t regret the push for healthier food. Schools are creating advocacy groups to fight for better foods in schools and to keep their children eating good and healthy. It may cost a little more but it will be possible to fix the National School Lunch Program. “Parent advocacy groups like Better School Food have rejected the National School Lunch Program and have turned instead to local farmers for alternatives (No Lunches Left Behind).” Schools need to start from scratch and cook up their own foods instead of heating processed foods. They should add more organic fruits and vegetables from farms. Food industries appear like they are incapable of selling schools healthier foods because they look to make profits instead of public health and school’s health. “Simply put: taxes would reduce consumption of unhealthful foods and generate billions of dollars annually. That money could be used to subsidize the purchase of staple foods like seasonal greens, vegetables, whole grains, dried legumes and fruit (Bad foods? Tax It, and Subsidize Vegetables).” Government should just put taxes on unhealthful food to use that money earned to go for healthier food at schools and in public.
Students at our high school say they do not like the school lunches. They understand what healthy foods are and healthy diets should be and are able to explain it to others. A lot of the students say they eat fast food at least 2-5 days a week. Although they don’t eat the school lunches, they see the foods and think it is unhealthy and not good for us to be eating. So some alternatives they said that they do is, eating lunches brought from home or just waiting until they get home to eat. Despite the fact that a couple of people said the food at the school were the best food ever, a great amount of the students said the food was almost inedible. They also rated the foods super close to fast foods and are made with the same ingredients. More than half of the students said that the foods should be healthier; in addition, if the school lunches were offered with more healthier foods options, different from what they are today, they would eat the healthier options, including farm grown vegetables and fruits (Survey).
Although we could change the foods given to the students, there are many downsides and arguments that the kids or students might not be fulfilled or fully satisfied after eating the lunches. But, changing the foods will give you healthier nutrients and should fill you up, some may argue. Schools should offer healthier options because the students need to energy and nutrients to operate and do well in their classes. Furthermore, some people may argue, why don’t they bring or make food from their homes? This isn’t going to work for many students if they live far from their school or their time management is off. Some students aren’t capable because it will cause them to be late and tardy to class. Even though their are alternatives into making school lunches better and healthier, there are a lot of cons and arguments against the proposal.
TIn conclusion, the students here at NMHS want healthier food choices, but aren’t doing their part in doing so. They throw their fruits and vegetables away and are eating the bad or unhealthy foods. We need to all pitch in as a group and do our part into making school lunches more filling yet healthy with a lot of nutrients and healthy grains.
